Listening to your interviewee's description of the fanfic culture, I think, provided a better angle into the connection between bronies and the alt-right. Given that MLP is set in a kingdom, the easiest plot—outside of romance—is that a foreigner invades and destroys the magical way of life existing in the kingdom. This is also like the ur-narrative of American/European far-right and its anti-immigrant politics. The interviewee said that the center of his politics is that he doesn't want to be a second-class citizen in his own country, and that also seems to be at the heart of the various plots he was summarizing (e.g., caribou invading MLP-land and turning it into a sex exploitation factory basically mirrors the "immigrants are coming over and raping our women" line). Thing is, I don't think you have to be a far-right sympathizer to write such a fanfic (even if it rehearses a far-right narrative). Rather, it's just a very convenient plot setup given the existing storyworld.

Thanks for the interesting interview! I've long wondered what happened to the bronies.

I feel like I drunkenly rambled about this lady before, but this episode feels more apt to comment, and ask if you know anything about them. I think you two have some overlap, and she was a total mystery to me up until like a month ago. I found her compelling enough to watch a 4 hour video on the starwars hotel. I don't care for starwars, nor hotels, so take that for what you will. Anywho, she made this video some time ago, and it might speak to a different side of this thing I didn't really know was a thing. Thoughts? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fVOF2PiHnc
