The pretense of incompetence works well. My spouse -- who is not a bimbo -- often uses this on telemarketers. “My husband doesn’t allow me to make any financial decisions” works extremely well on male telemarketers. Some seem understanding, others seem appalled. But none can argue it, though it is totally untrue.
I think Fukuyama gets a bad rap from people who only read the title. This really puts me in mind of the "boredom at the end of history", the desire for respect and construction of identities to suit
A very astute analysis. I had no idea this trend was out there. One trend that I’ve noticed on YouTube is women performing traditionally male activities, such as car restoration or woodworking. The women are legitimately competent. But they seem to rely on tight or revealing clothing for views. Male comments on the videos tend to focus (genuinely?) on the competence of the females and not the clothing.
