Wow poor guy. It’s like he’s another victim of the internet, which has the effect of churning someone’s life for fun and pearl-clutching, faux outrage and schadenfreude, then spitting them out and forgetting about them and the effects it might have on them and their life.
Didn't expect to cry reading this. Great interview, and an important archive of the history behind this photo and Alex himself.
It's also unfortunately a brutal snapshot of our current condition. Struggling with family loss, mental trauma, and physical disabilities/problems that you almost surely cannot afford. Attempting to make money by reaching out to people on the internet and crafting an identity using the very thing that, at least in Alex's mind, kickstarted a long series of unfortunate events. People posting and laughing at an image that, unknowingly, brought him shame and guilt. He seems like a wonderful person that got dealt a crap hand.
That's just the sadest story ever. Most people don't realise or I think don't even contemplate how imprecise the human mind is. How faulty it is at processing reality.
The internet is medieval. "Going viral" is the equivalent of finding some beans that lead you into the clouds where giants live. A normal person is cursed or blessed with significance outside of the scope of comprehension, in a totally arbitrary and silly way.
I never saw the foot lettuce photo until today. I do not recall eating at Burger King during the time period mentioned, though I ate there a lot when they released their chicken sandwich in the 90s and also eat there occasionally in recent years.
As I recall around that time there were also other factors in play - slightly more upscale burger options like five guys and shake shack really took off around that time frame (in addition to the franchise thing). So I don’t think you single-handedly brought down Burger King, fren.
Didn’t expect it to be this heavy. Turning a past shame that still deeply affects him („I'd rather end my family name with just someone who worked hard than someone who, you know, stepped in lettuce”) into an attempt at a career as an influencer out of desperation is wild stuff, really the peek of modernism
This makes my heart ache . He moves fast past losing both parents in high school, being a homeless kid, his sister being drug addicted, etc. oh unresolved trauma King foot lettuce is not thy name.. .🫣😭
Here's a link to his GoFundMe for his funeral expenses: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-honor-alexs-memory-with-support?attribution_id=sl:2567f649-94c8-42c5-bb67-1bc06d57ff9a&lang=en_US&ts=1752252308&utm_campaign=man_sharesheet_dash&utm_content=amp13_t1-amp14_t2-amp15_t3&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link&v=amp14_t2

Yes, exactly.

Yes, and Chipotle explodes in popularity around the same time
Interesting interview, BTW. Where did you find this guy?
He reached out to me!

It would make a good play, I think.
